What's so specific about ... actors with Chemical Sensitivity?
"To continue to pursue an acting career with MCS is quite a
challenge, as the profession necessitates working with other actors, in
a theatre, with an audience.
My " DREAM THEATRE " would be :
| 1. |
A safe building with a whole house, air
purification system. Nestled in a clean neighborhood. No pesticides or
herbicides used anywhere! |
| 2. |
All interiors, including the sets, would
be constructed of non-toxic materials. |
| 3. |
Costumes would be made with untreated
materials & laundered with special cleaners & make-up would be
hypoallergenic. |
| 4. |
Special requests printed, that all actors
& the audience members come scent free. |
| 5. |
Of course NO smoking anywhere! Hard on the
nervous actor. |
TV work could
follow the same guidelines, Movie work would be more difficult, because
of all of the traveling. A safe plane & traveling buses could be
arranged but in some cases, it would mean changing whole countries!
* In Ashland, Oregon, at the Shakespeare
theatre, the printed programs ask people to come fragrance free. They
will also try to seat you by yourself, if there's room.
* In Palm Springs, California, at the Musical
Rep. theatre, no actor can wear any fragrance to rehearsals, must keep
it minimal for performances & they don't spray the theatre. I know
this, because I talked to one of the actors. He has asthma, but has
been able to continue his career. There is always a way, IF people
support each other with open minds & loving hearts." (Lari
Jacqueline Doughty, poet and ex-actress with MCS, California)
