"It is difficult being a musician with Chemical Sensitivity because of the numerous potential problems with people, places and things. First, you have to be able to tolerate whatever instrument you use. An acoustic guitar may have a finish on the wood that isn't tolerated. A well used piano may be too musty. Electric instruments may cause symptoms of EMF sensitivity. Electronic amplifiers, recording equipment, effects processors, computers and other items may give off fumes for years. It may be impossible to enter a recording studio.

It is difficult to rehearse and perform with other musicians because of their instruments, their shampoo residue or their laundry soap, not to mention if they intentionally used fragrances. It may be impossible to find a venue that you can perform in because of toxic building materials, cleaning products and pesticide use. Cigarette smoke is a major obstacle, even at an outdoor venue. Most independent musicians need to perform to sell their CDs so performance is important both to share one's work and also to make some money from the venue and CD sales."
